His Excellency,The British High Commissioner to Malaysia,Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur.
Sir,
MEMORANDUM OF PROTEST AGAINST BRITISH RECOGNITION OF SALMAN RUSHDIE
On behalf of the Islamic Party of Malaysia (PAS) we register our utmost regret and disgust at the British Government decision to award Salman Rushdie the title ‘Sir’. At a time when a lot of effort has been put in to bridge the gap between Islam and the west, the decision of your government has sent the opposite message.
Salman Rushdie is not a literary genius. His work is very limited and confined to a narrow and twisted view of one of the great religion in the world namely Islam. He made a name not just within the literary circle but the whole world by penning a blasphemous novel, Satanic Verse, that angered Muslims worldwide. His only contribution to society is the creation of hatred among people of different religions. His other writings were flops. The last that we expect from civilized people of the world is recognition of his divisive work.
The honorary award by the British Government is indeed a confirmation that Rushdie’s work in insulting Islam is not just his personal contempt against Islam but an effort supported by certain government in the west. For a British Government to sponsor such a deliberate anti-Islam stance will only further deepen ill-feelings between Islam and the west. It is almost unthinkable that the British Government had failed to consider the sensitive nature of this issue.
We have only respect for the stature and public standing of previous recipients of the British ‘knighthood’. However, the inclusion of Rushdie will only taint the image of this exclusive hall of fame. In the name of peace and mutual respect, we demand that the award be withdrawn, and the British Government distant itself from provocateur like Salman Rushdie.
Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
DATO’ SERI HAJI ABDUL HADI AWANG
